- State continues to position itself as a preferred cruise ship destination thanks to its touristic and natural attractions, as well an outstanding and internationally recognized level of security.
- Yucatan’s current state administration, in partnership with the private sector and Yucatecan society, has made improvements in the expansion and modernization of port of Progreso, positioning it as one of the favorites of international shipping companies.
Since the 1990s, the port of Progreso — ideally situated on the Western Caribbean cruise route — has contributed to the diversification of Yucatan state’s tourism offer. Today, Progreso and Yucatan as a whole are recognized both at home and abroad as some of the safest destinations in Mexico, and thus attract ever greater levels of tourism and investment.
As part of the promotional strategy of the Yucatan Tourism Board, the destination was represented at the 36th edition of the annual Seatrade Cruise Global trade event. There, the commitment and interest of the cruise industry to continue operations at the port of Progreso was confirmed and strengthened in meetings held with different cruise line companies.
The improvement, expansion, and modernization of the port of Progreso will continue to attract more and larger vessels in the future. Currently, the capacity for arrivals is for ships carrying up to 2,500 passengers; with current improvements, that figure will increase to 7,000 or 8,000. This will allow the state to be much more competitive with other international cruise destinations.
New investments in the region, such as the construction of the Fincantieri Shipyard, also raise interest in Yucatan’s growth, which leads to the creation of better tourism products and services that benefit the entity and its inhabitants. It is worth mentioning that Progreso was one of the first ports to be reactivated after the Covid-19 pandemic and that it will continue to encourage the arrival of more firms such as Compagnie du Ponant, Silversea, and Mystic, among others. Regarding cruise ship arrivals in Progreso, the recovery has been significant since the reactivation in July 2021. For 2022, there are more than 100 vessels scheduled to arrive and it is expected that this figure will continue to increase.
