Discover the Treasures of Hotel Hacienda El Santuario in San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende, Gto. March 11, 2019 – Discover the rich and vibrant collection of traditional Mexican folk art that lives within Hotel Hacienda El Santuario in San Miguel de Allende. Located 2 short blocks from the World Heritage site and icon of the city – the San Miguel de Allende Church, the hotel is a luxury boutique hotel whose beauty and charm is deeply rooted in Mexican history, tradition, and culture.

One of the pillars of Mexican culture is the creation of bold and captivating works of art and handicrafts. From brilliant street murals to intricately carved masks, and everything in between, Mexico has been heralded throughout the centuries for its awe-inspiring works of art. One of the best places in all of Mexico to discover these artistic treasures is within Hotel Hacienda El Santuario.

Hotel Hacienda El Santuario houses one of the biggest collections of Mexican folk art in San Miguel de Allende. The Hacienda’s collection represents an exemplary journey of Mexican tradition through more than a thousand artistic creations of Mexico’s native peoples. These pieces emphasize the work and spirit of local artisans in richly decorated works and objects that tell the story of Mexico’s origins, represented in clay, wood, metals, or textiles. Creativity comes from all corners of Mexico, like Michoacan, Puebla, Oaxaca, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Chiapas, and more, offering a broad visual panorama created by the hands of Mexican artisans.

Take, for example, this Jaguar made from polychrome clay. The jaguar symbolizes the guardian of the jungle and is a mythical icon. Artisans from all over Amatenango del Valle in the state of Chiapas construct representations using mastery in mud. Polychrome clay is also one of the most appreciated and recognized forms of art in Mexican pottery.

But these brilliant pieces of Mexican culture and heritage are not the only treasures of the Hacienda. The building itself is a testament to the passing of time and the evolution of Mexico all on its own. The stones that construct the hotel date back to the 16th century, but the first mention of it in history is in the mid-18th century, described with having its current portico and inner courtyard surrounded by arches. Today every corner of the hacienda has been lovingly restored under the specifications from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), which is responsible for the protection of the monuments of the historic center of San Miguel de Allende.

Now it runs as a mesmerizing luxury boutique hotel. Its 33 suites are all uniquely named and decorated with crafts from distinct regions of Mexico. There are three Grand Master Suites, 13 Master Suites, 13 Junior Suites and four Petit Suites. Each one has something special that gives it its own personality. Some suites have their own small outdoor terraces and beautiful, handmade talavera tubs.

The Hacienda prides itself on its environmental awareness, as well, and has developed one of the only green roofs in San Miguel de Allende. This small space atop the hotel grows flowers, as well as fruits and vegetables that provide ingredients to make dishes and preserves in the Hacienda’s kitchen. All the ingredients that cannot be obtained inside the hotel are locally sourced.

Suites at Hotel Hacienda El Santuario start from $124 per night.

Guests and visitors can also see an enigmatic Catrina figurine on display, as well. The Catrina was created by the hand of Mexican engraver Jose Guadalupe Posada. Today it is a subject of pure Mexican craftsmanship and culture. This original piece is from a mud workshop in Michoacan. The Monarch butterfly is the symbol of the region and this example of Catrina dressed in the element of nature is the most appreciated in the community.
