Nayarit Reaffirms Position as an “It Destination” at Mexico’s Tianguis Turístico

Spanish Version

TIJUANA, Baja California Norte, April 30, 2025 — The Tianguis Turístico México is the most important annual tourism business forum in Mexico, bringing thousands of domestic and international participants to its events each year. The 2025 edition of Tianguis Turístico México is currently taking place in Tijuana, Baja California Norte, and is the first forum to have a binational component, with San Diego — just across the border in the U.S. — as a special guest.

At this year’s Tianguis Turístico, the state of Nayarit is represented by a delegation whose objective is reaffirming its diversity in offerings, inviting everyone to experience the destination. Headed by state Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero, and Juan Enrique Suarez del Real Tostado, minister of tourism delegations, Nayarit is participating in special events aiming to highlight its increase in farming and cultivation production; the reincorporation of traditional candies, liquors and costumes; and natural and adventure offerings, as wells as its history, archaeology and gastronomy scenes, anchored by its internationally renowned destination of the Riviera Nayarit. These, under its tourism campaigns “Awaken Paradise” for the Riviera Nayarit and “Mexico to Discover” for the entire state.

At Tianguis, Nayarit also is announcing preparations to welcome thousands of athletes and visitors to a series of sporting events that will highlight the state’s natural beauty and diversity. The Nayarit Tourism Secretariat and Sabino Producciones are together organizing an impressive agenda of activities — one being the second annual IRONMAN 70.3 Riviera Nayarit — to attract both Mexican and international athletes, promoting state as an ideal destination for sports tourism.

In addition, the Nayarit is promoting the imminent debut of a second landing strip at Riviera Nayarit International Airport, expected to be fully operational early in 2025. The airport will introduce a new route to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) beginning July 16, connecting the west coast of the U.S. and Canada to the state’s capital. Earlier this year, a new route from Mexico City began and now connects Nayarit to South America and Europe.

Nayarit also is announcing partnerships with the state of Baja California South, to jointly promotion their outdoor adventure offerings, and with Provine — Mexico’s wine association — to help position Nayarit’s wine region. State representatives also announced the Vallarta Nayarit Gastronomica 2025 dates (Oct. 10-18, 2025). This year, Nayarit will also host from Oct. 13 to 16 the WMF SUMMIT RIVIERA NAYARIT  with World Meetings Forum, a MICE industry business platform that brings together highly qualified buyers and suppliers through exclusive and personalized live and digital events.

A key moment in this year’s Tianguis was the opening of the first Ventanas de Mexico, or “Windows of Mexico,” which will provide information to the public interested in travel and Mexican culture. Mexico’s Minister of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez, cut the ribbon at the first location of its kind, in San Diego. She noted that the opening of the space marks the debut of the new Puntos México network, a series of sites that will promote the artistic, culinary, cultural, artisanal and natural wealth of the Mexican states. Nayarit participated in the weekend-long opening celebration with traditional Wixárika dancer performances and workshop.

In other Tianguis news, Nayarit received awards and recognitions from TripAdvisor for Punta Mita; Mexico Desconocido, where Lo de Marcos won “Best Beach to Discover in 2025”; the Wixarika immersion visit won “Best community tourism experience” and Nayarit won “Best Destination to Experience by Road” .

Nayarit’s hotel sector is also experiencing unprecedented growth, with at least 10 new openings planned by 2026. Major hotel investors — including AMResorts, Grupo Vidanta, Marriott International and Melia Hotels International Group —  are spearheading this expansion. Family-friendly hotels and attractions such as Iberostar Grand and the Cirque du Soleil theme park will enhance Nayarit’s appeal as a premier destination for all ages. Development plans also include opening Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Westin, Autograph Collection and Ritz-Carlton properties. Melia will introduce the Gran Melia Hotel in Riviera Nayarit, with 180 rooms and suites, and the Hotel Zel Sayulita in 2025. The Belmont brand, meanwhile, will debut its Milaroca hotel in 2025, while Montage and Pendry are slated to open within the Punta Mita complex in 2026.

Nayarit and its many “micro-destinations” have been trending thanks to its reimagining from a solely sun-and-sand destination to one bringing its cultural, historical, gastronomy and outdoors offerings to the forefront. This year, Nayarit was ranked as one of the places to visit in 2025 (Good Morning America, Chase Traveler, and Yahoo!Life), Mexico’s Off the Grid Paradise (MSN, Boston Globe and Lonely Planet), a Digital Detox Retreat by The New York Times, and a Luxurious and Cultural Destination (La Tribune, OC Register,  Forbes, and Uptown Magazine). Making the news has also been its “Magical Towns”: San Blas (Le Journal de Montreal), Sayulita (Brides Magazine), Mexcaltitán (Islands Magazine), and Jala (Globe and Mail), as well as its golfing (Sun Media), and its infrastructure (Travel + Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler, Forbes, OK Magazine and Virtuoso Magazine.)

Increasing the state’s trending factor is that Nayarit has joined the big leagues in sports events an d tourism, with exclusive alliances with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Dallas Cowboys and Canada’s Vancouver Canucks, developing consumer-focused campaigns that will position its tourism offerings — especially several outdoors events in—  front of millions of North American sports fans.

In March, Nayarit hosted the annual Gala Riviera Nayarit, the second-biggest trade event in Mexico, after Tianguis. Gala 2025 brought in a new standard of international participants, as the Ministry of Tourism of Nayarit worked with tourism key players such as USTOA (U.S .Tour Operators Association), ASTA (American Society of Travel Advisors), ATTA (Adventure Travel Trade Association) and IGLTA (International LGBTQ+ Travel Association) to invite guests, most of them new, to the area and its offerings.
