• The route from Toronto will operate until April 2022 through the winter season
• With this direct service, Yucatán will end this 2021 with 5 direct international routes
December 14, 2021 – Toronto, ON – The route Toronto – Mérida operated by WestJet, reactivated last November 30th and will operate through the winter season, as part of the connectivity recovery plan implemented by the Government of Yucatan through the Yucatan Tourism Board.
Michelle Fridman, head of Yucatan Tourism Board, commented “We are happy to welcome back all Canadians who come to enjoy our weather, our gastronomy, and our cultural diversity. Thanks to the good sanitary practices protocol that we have implemented in the tourism industry, Yucatán is an ideal destination for Canadians to visit and feel safe.”
The Mérida – Toronto route will be operating once a week until the end of the winter season in April 2022. It is important to consider that the Canadian government has implemented biosafety protocols that must be met for entry to said country, considering among them the presentation of the vaccination certificate or negative test at least 72 hours prior to the direct flight to that country, therefore, it is necessary to visit the official pages for more information.
This was achieved thanks to the gradual restart of international air mobility, in addition to the reopening of borders by the Canadian government and the excellent management and control of the pandemic carried out by the Government of Yucatan in all its sectors and the constant communication with the airline to keep them informed about the implemented measures, specifically for the tourism industry, where, since the beginning of the pandemic, a Good Sanitary Practices Program was implemented, through Yucatan’s Tourism Board, being one of the first destinations in Mexico to receive the Safe Travels Seal granted by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which was even approved by neighboring states, international airlines and implemented to provide visitors and locals with a health bubble.
It should be noted that this route has operated successfully since 2015 for four consecutive periods, with 77% occupancy until before the suspension in March 2020, due to control measures and containment of contagions by Covid-19. The aircrafts used for this route are Boing 737-700 and Boing 737 -800, with a capacity of 142 and 174 passengers, respectively.
With this direct service, Yucatán will end this 2021 with 5 direct international routes: Miami, Houston, Oakland, Dallas, and Toronto, which continues the tourism reactivation, ensuring the arrival of visitors to the destination and the gradual economic recovery for the State.
Since July of this year, Puerto Progreso restarted operations with the arrival of the first cruise ship with passengers in the post-pandemic era, with a total arrival of 17 cruise ships with 39,651 passengers. By December 31, the arrival of 5 more cruise ships to the state and a first arrival from Royal Caribbean are expected, as the visit of a first Disney Cruise, scheduled for December 24, in addition to the resumption of arrivals by the French shipping company Ponant
