State Of Yucatan Ready To Celebrate 45th Edition Of Tianguis Turistico

Mexico’s largest travel event will take place March 22-25 in Merida

Mérida, Mexico — March 2, 2020 — On Feb. 27, Mexico’s tourism secretary, Miguel Torruco Marques, was joined by the governor of the state of Yucatán, Mauricio Vila Dosal and the state secretary of tourism development, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, at a press conference to announce that Yucatán and Mexico are ready for Tianguis Turístico 2020, which will take place from March 22 to 25 in state capital Mérida.

Secretary Torruco Marques confirmed the city’s Yucatán Century XXI Convention Center is ready to receive the thousands of participants who will attend the 45th edition of this key annual travel event. To date, 1,020 individual buyers are registered. Of that number, 551, or 54%, are Mexican, while the remaining 469 will arrive from abroad.

On a business level, there are 568 registered buying companies, of which 251 are domestic and 317 are foreign, while 700 national companies will take part as exhibitors. In all, attendees will hail from 45 countries and 32 Mexican states.

Governor Vila Dosal said that Yucatán has the experience, the capacity and the infrastructure to host the best Tianguis Turístico in history, and that Yucatecans are ready to welcome those in attendance with open arms.

Secretary Fridman Hirsch added that Tianguis Turístico arrives in Yucatán at a particularly auspicious time, just after the spring equinox — a time rich in significance in local Maya culture. “Not only will we be premiering the newly expanded and renovated exhibition center, but the visitors of the Tianguis Turístico 2020 will be able to enjoy endless new products of hotel, gastronomy, services and tourist experiences that show that the state of Yucatan is a destination where modernity coexists perfectly with tradition,” she said. “The equinox, as one of the most emblematic and significant celebrations of the Maya culture, will be the perfect setting for a rebirth of this solid industry.”

Secretary Torruco Marqués also announced that a new initiative regarding handicapped accessibility will take center stage at Tianguis Turístico 2020. National tourism agency SECTUR estimates that 36 million differently abled tourists could potentially visit Mexico; as a result, the federal agency will institute a new certification program for handicapped accessibility.

While this year’s Tianguis Turístico takes place in Mérida, Secretary Torruco Marqués  reminded press conference attendees that, throughout its history, the event was held for 36 consecutive years in Acapulco, its birthplace, from its inception in 1975 until 2011. In 2012, Tianguis Turístico began to rotate among Mexico’s leading tourism destinations, including Puerto Vallarta, Puebla and Cancún.
