Chacala, Nayarit: The Secret Bay That Glows at Night

Riviera Nayarit, Nayarit (Aug. 19, 2025) — On the southern coast of Nayarit, where the mountains meet the Pacific, lies Chacala, a fishing village known for its quiet beach, fresh seafood and a rare natural spectacle: bioluminescence.

Located in the Riviera Nayarit, the town offers golden sand, calm surf and a setting of palms and tropical orchards. Jungle trails reveal towering trees such as mahogany, parota and rosewood, along with wildlife ranging from armadillos to tropical birds. Just a short walk away, Chacalilla Beach provides a secluded cove for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking.

From August through December, the bay sometimes glows with tiny blue sparks that appear when the water is disturbed. Caused by marine microorganisms called dinoflagellates, the phenomenon makes each wave shimmer like liquid starlight. For many visitors, swimming at night in these conditions is unforgettable.

Chacala has also become a hub for wellness and mindful tourism. Visitors can take part in temazcal ceremonies, sunset yoga sessions and massages with local herbs. Mar de Jade, a beachfront retreat, is considered a pioneer of regenerative tourism, with its own gardens, community education programs and local employment initiatives.

Food is central to the experience. Lalaxtli, housed in what was once an armory during the era of the Manila Galleon, serves breakfasts made with local products alongside ocean views. Chico’s is a longtime favorite for pescado zarandeado, ceviche and aguachiles prepared to order.

One of the area’s standout excursions is a hike to the crater of an extinct volcano, offering sweeping views of Chacala Bay. About 10 kilometers away, the Altavista petroglyphs showcase hundreds of ancient stone carvings more than a thousand years old, reflecting the mythology of the region’s earliest inhabitants.

From Tepic, take Federal Highway 200 toward Compostela and continue to Las Varas. A paved road about nine kilometers west leads directly to Chacala’s one-kilometer stretch of beach.

Blending nature, culture and sustainability, Chacala offers an alternative to crowded resort destinations. Here, luxury is not measured in size but in stillness — in a glowing sea at night and in the warmth of its people.
