State of Yucatan Continues Record Figures in Tourism Indicators

During the first four-months of the year, the Mérida Airport exceeded 2022’s figure by 42%
• From 2019 to the present, private tourism investment has grown 278%, with more than $1.795 billion USD
• 98 lodging centers have opened during the current administration, generating more than 7,800 jobs.

As a result of the decentralization strategies of Tourism, promoted by the Governor of Yucatán, Mauricio Vila Dosal, and implemented by the Ministry of Tourism Development (SEFOTUR) headed by Michelle Fridman Hirsh, the entity has managed to exceed its pre-pandemic indicators, as well as attracting new investments, reflecting the confidence of travelers and investors in a destination that stands out for its vast cultural, gastronomic, business and natural, plus the fact that it is one of the safest states in Mexico.

Thanks to this, Yucatán has become a point of constant private investment in different sectors, even during the pandemic period, the entity did not stop standing out in the southeast region of Mexico for said investments, with Tourism being one of the most benefited. Reporting from the beginning of the current administration to date, $31,012,677,935, of which 35 percent has been directly linked to the construction, remodeling or planning of new lodging centers.

From 2019 until today, there are 98 hotels that are currently in operation, adding 2,450 new rooms to the state’s lodging offer, which currently has more than 15,900 rooms.

It should be noted that the operation and construction of these new hotels implies the generation of 2,116 direct jobs and 5,739 indirect ones.
These hotels are distributed in the six tourist regions of Yucatan, with 31 in the Mundo Maya Capital, 20 in the region of Cenotes and Haciendas, 5 in Puerto Maya, 7 in Riviera Yucatan, 2 more in Ruta Puuc and Aldeas Mayas and the state capital with 33 hotels.

Still, with the increase in the number of rooms, during the first months of 2023, Yucatan has presented an increase in hotel occupancy with a record of 583,870 visitors from January to March, exceeding the figure for the same period of 2019 by 21.6% and 9.7% with respect to 2022. The average occupancy in the State this year was 57.8 percent.

For its part, the International Airport of the City of Mérida, also registered record figures during the first four-months of the year, which registered 1,209,537 passengers by air, which represents an increase of 42.5% compared to the 848,666 passengers received during the same period last year. Grupo Asur, reported that in April the air terminal reached a million passengers, setting a record in passengers for that month in the history of the airport. Last March, it registered a total of 316,865 passengers (arrivals and departures), more than 84,300 passengers than those received in the same month in 2022 an increase of 40.7% compared to the 225,255 passengers received during March 2019, prior to the pandemic.

Taking this background as a reference, it can be said that during the current administration, large investments have been attracted in hotel infrastructure, as well as in the development of tourism products, which allow the decentralization of tourism in the entity, stimulating the increase in social improvement and economic spillover to more points of the state.
